Here are some of the past and present projects and businesses working out of Big Al’s Sub Shop!

4 businesses and counting have been launched out of the space, including an earthquake bracing company, custom camper van conversion companies, custom metal fabricators, and a startup company that develops scientific instruments for microscopy and spectroscopy.

Quake Bracing, LLC manufactures economical and efficient structural bracing systems for strengthening "soft-story" buildings to better resist earthquakes. Our system fits into skinny spaces where other systems will not, and our innovative structural fuses allow for quick and easy repairs after an earthquake. Contractors love the ease of installation compared to conventional steel frame bracing systems. Learn more at quakebracing.com

COVID-19 PPE

As COVID-19 spread, so did PPE shortages across the Bay Area. Many of our members jumped in to help make PPE when hospitals, clinics, and essential worker PPE supplies were running low.

Launched in March 2020, Open Source Medical Supplies (OSMS) brought together a global network of over 70,000 makers, fabricators, community organizers, and medical professionals working to meet the unprecedented medical supply challenges stemming from the pandemic.

As a small part of that initiative, the Bay Area based Saving Face Volunteers, led by one of our members Cy Lo, personally made 27,000+ face shields to help ensure the health of our community! cylobuilders.com

High Grade Partners

We started High Grade four years ago. Since then, we’ve primarily focused on delivering best in class construction management services to our clients.

Last year, we had this crazy idea to build our dream van. We knew we wanted to do something different. Not because it would be better, but because it would be fun! So we partnered up with our long time friend and colleague, Andrew Wade Keating, AIA.

In the end, things turned out better than we could have imagined! This has encouraged us to continue creating more cool spaces of our own. We’re now licensed as contractors in the State of California and are working on a bunch of projects in house that we hope to share in the years to come. We hope you enjoy what you see and join along for the journey.
